Orphan big brown bat flight test - not ready to go
It’s release time for the eight orphaned big brown bats and I’ve been giving them a final check over and test to be sure they are flying well. This particular little guy didn’t want to leave the glove at all, and only managed a short hop. He’s visibly round, and may be more flight ready once he’s lost some weight. Of the eight bats, five flew well and three were reluctant or not strong fliers. All three were on the heavy side for adult big brown bats. Once the others are released it’ll be easier to control their food intake - hopefully I can get them slimmed down and flight ready by this year but if not, they’ll overwinter and we’ll try again in the spring.

Orphan big brown bat - flight test didn’t go as planned
Переглядів 2389 місяців тому
The eight orphaned big brown bats are getting a final check up before release, and I’m testing each one to make sure they are flying well. These are the faces you make while trying to extract a bat from behind your neck. Bats don’t normally fly into hair or land on people, but in the small confines of the flight tent she didn’t have many other choices. She’s also flying great and is ready to re...

It’s time to release the eight big brown bat orphans, so I’m giving everyone a final good look over check up and test to make sure they are flying well. This guy is looking great!
Bat orphans in flight tent
Переглядів 10310 місяців тому
The eight bat orphans have spent the past few weeks outside in a large tent to practice flying - this is the last step before they’re released back into the wild. Several of them are out and looking great here (the loud noise is a passing motorcycle in my neighborhood) - I’ll individually flight test each of them before release.
Three raccoon orphans indoor cage cleaning playtime
Переглядів 28810 місяців тому
Raccoon orphans Notch, Decibel, and Bother were almost weaned and ready to move outside at this point - one way to tell it’s time for a cage upgrade, they were trashing their house every night and it was getting very hard to keep it cleaned. Cleaning time was very exciting - new places to climb!
Orphan skunk eating from dish
Переглядів 57910 місяців тому
This little skunk baby was found walking in circles near a park office - an adult skunk had been hit by a car on the busy road nearby. He was covered in ticks and other parasites and very thin, but was old enough to eat on his own from a dish and recovered quickly. Since I didn’t have any other skunk babies to put him with, he was transferred to a different wildlife rehabilitator with several s...
Raccoon orphans introduction to outdoor enclosure
Переглядів 20810 місяців тому
Once raccoon orphans Notch, Decibel, and Bother were all eating solid food on their own it was time to move them from their indoor house (which was an epic mess every morning) into much bigger outdoor quarters where they can practice being raccoons.
Bip the big brown bat responding to voice
Переглядів 15210 місяців тому
Bip, the littlest big brown bat orphan, learned very quickly while still in the incubator that the sound of my voice meant food time. For some wildlife it’s important to limit exposure to human voices to avoid habituation, but big brown bats are not likely to approach humans again once released. (Gandalf the cat chimes in at the end).

Fresh straw is a great excuse for frolics and wrestling for Notch, Decibel, and Bother, the three 2023 raccoon orphans. They’ll be released back into the wild in early fall.

Fun Fact: These opossums have a 3 stage defense system to protect themselves from predators. Stage 1 is to bare their teeth and hiss to try and seem menacing. Stage 2 is to actually play dead, not a lot of animals want to eat something if it appears weak or sickly. Stage 3, opossums can smell horrible, so they can be “dead” (unconscious) for hours and predators will be fooled into thinking it’s a rotting corpse. So unless they are super desperate, they won’t get near them.

Thanks for the adorable video! As a new baby possum sitter, I wanted to know the sounds a mom would make to communicate with her babies. Most of the videos out there show defensive behaviors like hissing. All I can think is, my dude, they wouldn’t be hissing at you if you hadn’t cornered them. They’re such cuties!
